ANNUAL REPORT
A vibrant and fresh re-design for a 2019 year-in-review.
A well-designed annual report is integral for any business, and I set out to do exactly that! Tasked with creating a multi-page annual report for a company of our choice, I decided on a grocery store. I chose to focus on the food and provide a break from the mountains of text. I accomplished this by utilizing bright, vibrant photography of fruits and veggies throughout the sections and spreads. In order to evoke a fresh, natural feel, I used a color palette consisting of various shades of green. Typography was kept simple, featuring bold san-serif headers and clean body copy. When designing the cover, I wanted something more dynamic, opting to create a die cut of the logo that allows for a glimpse at the vibrant food photography throughout the book.
Financial information is what makes an annual report what it is, but it’s also some of the most difficult to lay out in a visually appealing way. I started by conceptualizing the different ways I could design this information, so it wasn’t just bar-graphs, after bar-graphs. I switched up the monotony of it all by altering the size, orientation, and layout of the information that needed to be in bar-graph form. Visualizing information gave me more creative freedom. For one of my favorites, I created an infographic using a bubble chart. Various sizes in circles and placement on the graph symbolize the amount of money in that category. For another, in order to keep the focus on the community, I chose to feature images of each group in a full-page pie-graph. This showcases how each group plays a part in the whole sum, fundraised, and also gives them credit for their involvement. I utilized the same typography and color palette to accomplish these infographics, and kept them cohesive with the rest of the book. Annual reports are long and sometimes can be difficult to lay out effectively. Using my keen eye for layout, typography, color, photography, and image integration, as well as an open and creative mind, I was able to design an effective, understandable, and visually interesting annual report for 2019.
