2024 SUMMER OLYMPICS
Exciting and lively branding to promote and celebrate the 2024 Summer Olympics!
The year is 2024, and the Summer Olympic Games are coming to Johnston, RI! In this project we were tasked with creating a brand for the 2024 games, based on our hometown. The project deliverables included branding, posters, apparel, tickets, and postcards. In hopes of finding concept inspiration, I began by thoroughly researching the details and history of my town. One of the most beautiful areas of Johnston is Dame Farm, especially when the flowers are in bloom. For that reason I based the logo mark on an abstract representation of a flower.
When creating the first poster, I knew I wanted to utilize photography. After scouring UnSplash for the perfect image that captured the excitement and movement of athletics, I found one. I began working out different ways of integrating the logo mark with the image. After endlessly exploring all options I landed on what would come to be my final composition. Treating the logo mark as a pattern, and allowing that to dictate how the photo was treated, helped create a visual interest to the background. I felt there needed to be more movement rather than visually containing the athlete. I designed the athlete exploding from the constraints of the image, breaking the boundaries and the color scheme. Having the athlete in black and white against the blue background helped them stand out as well. After perfecting the layout and aesthetic of the poster, it was just a matter of translating that to different sizes for the postcard and ticket. For the apparel I chose a tote bag, keeping it simple with a version of the logo on one side, and the logo mark enlarged as a pattern on the other. Next time you’re in Johnston, RI, think of me, and the incredible Olympic Games that could have been.
